A bed of sawdust and wood is put in the pit and the pottery placed on top and covered with more sawdust and wood and the fire is lit.  It is allowed to burn down and the pit is covered with a metal lid which traps the smoke in the pit.

This coloration is achieved without putting a glaze on the piece.  A coat of wax is put on the piece and it is polished to a soft sheen to protect the finish.

This piece was truly a surprise when we took it out of the pit - it actually has a figure on it.  NFS
